奥运！

 

半夜老妈还打电话来说，中国热闹得不得了
下午公司都放假拉，大家都回家看奥运去
哈，想象着问候语从＂吃了没＂变成＂看奥运了没＂
多有中国特色啊

 

我要是在过国内
现在一定守着电视，和朋友和家人一块，进行着具有中国特色的集体活动，多乐
不用一大半早就巴巴地打开收音机
碰上的却是一段两个加拿大人对中国政府举办奥运的一些举动的批评

 

很生气
我相信我们有很多不足的地方，我们也接受善意的建议
可是只顾着自己，尽展讥讽能事的言辞是不是toooooo愚蠢？

听听他们都说了什么？

“I think it is from Chinese history. People were told what to do by the government: when to get up, what to dress, when and where to bow to Chair Mao. Now the government gave out pamphlets…ask people to smile!!”

 “Yes, that is actually right. They rarely smile…”（真的吗？我常常都笑啊）
“And……Chinese people smile in inappropriate situations. For example, they smile when they are embarrassed（这叫自我解嘲，好不好。）….and they cover their mouth when smiling and don’t want to show their teeth.........I don’t understand”（我倒要看看你裂着大嘴，露出牙齿，笑得有多合理？不过是不同文化不同的社会行为而已啊？）
“haha….possibly because of bad dental plans” （离谱。。。where goes your "sensitivity to international issues" as a journalist?）

 

“Now the Chinese young people are quite different from the older. They do whatever they want. If the government ask them to wear no more than 3 colors, they just make fun of it”
“There are a lot of FenQin （，他们的中文还可以啊） – angry youth. For example, they boycott the JiaLeFu, yet not long later, people are lining up to shop!” (你们boycott中国奥运的时候就不angry？)

 

不过其中有一个在清华大学任教的加拿大人说话非常中肯。既指出我们的不足，也帮助解释那些＂不理解＂。比如西藏的问题，中国学生被说成愤青的时候，他就说＂其实也是因为中国的老百姓被无辜伤害，而西方在不了解事实的情况下就做按照老模式自行推测，作出了错误的报道。。。＂听了还是很感动的。可惜他一直被其他两个人打断。想起一句话＂半壶水响叮铛＂

Emerging from history's humiliation
Before China's relatively recent economic and political resurgence, Chinese historians and ideologues believe, the country endured '100 years of humiliation' at the hands of Western powers and Japan, from the mid-19th century onward. In the late 1970s, when senior leader Deng Xiaoping famously proclaimed, "to be rich is glorious," much of the country was poor, ravaged by recent history. Illiteracy was rampant, and few had access to television, radio, books or ideas beyond the thoughts of the late Mao Zedong.

Today, it's safe to say Deng's aphorism is taken to heart by China's 1.3 billion people. Getting rich is all the rage. Chinese goods flood world markets. Students from around the globe study at universities in Beijing and Shanghai. China has arrived.

So has national pride.

The Chinese people are proud of their country's resurgence, and they cheer on its athletes and business executives alike.

Yet many in this vast land worry that the world doesn't respect them as it should.

"A particularly important element in the formation of China's modern identity has been the legacy of the country's 'humiliation' at the hands of foreigners," writes journalist and East Asia scholar Orville Schell in the New York Review of Books.
